Department of Sociology

The Department of Sociology at Saint Mary’s University offers an undergraduate education with training in quantitative and qualitative research methods, a solid grounding in sociological theoretical perspectives, and courses that reflect the major substantive areas in the discipline.

With our service learning honours thesis option, service learning components in our courses, international collaborative teaching, and international scholarly exchanges, our students are exposed to a variety of pedagogical techniques that advance their sociological training and intellectual growth. Our sociological programme is designed to produce graduates exceptionally able to compete for positions in the labour market, graduate school, or further professional training.

Our six full-time faculty are engaged researchers, publish in leading journals, and hold international reputations for creative and influential scholarship. We are committed to research and teaching excellence and are experts in: sociology of sex, gender, and sexualities; science and technology studies; sociology of the family; law; power and violence; migration and immigration; international development; refugee studies; social and political movements; race and ethnicity; health and well-being; social theory; political sociology; environmental sociology; and historical sociology.
