Sobeys Inspiration Hub

Fostering creativity and innovation

"

The Sobeys Inspiration Hub is the latest addition to the Saint Mary’s University campus. The 43,000-square-foot, four-storey building of glass and steel is a catalyst for entrepreneurship and innovation.

The building is named in recognition of the extraordinary gift of $18 million from the Sobey family, Sobey Foundation and Sobeys Inc., the largest gift in the university’s history, and as a tribute to the visionary leadership of the Sobey family who, for more than 40 years, have supported Saint Mary’s University and the Sobey School of Business.

When it opened on October 11, 2023, the Saint Mary’s University community—faculty, staff and students—welcomed donors, alumni, government representatives and business and community partners to campus to explore and celebrate the Sobeys Inspiration Hub.

The celebrations included an Indigenous Welcome, a ribbon cutting, and speeches from Saint Mary’s University President and Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Summerby-Murray; Michael Medline, CEO and President of Sobeys Inc.; Janis Sobey-Hames representing the Sobey family; Arthur Irving of Irving Oil and MP Andy Fillmore. Over 200 guests including members of the Sobey and Irving families toured the research centre, labs, interactive classrooms and discovery zone. Students and researchers led workshops to showcase the Sobeys Inspiration Hub.
